3 Bucket List Travel Destinations I Haven’t Visited Yet (But Think About Often)

Angkor Watt

There are places in this world that live in your imagination long before you ever set foot in them.

For me, three bucket list travel destinations sit permanently at the top of my list:

  • Cambodia (Angkor Wat)

  • The Maldives

  • Nicaragua

I’ve never been to any of them.

But each one means something deeply different to me.

And one day, I’ll stand in all three.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia — A Childhood Dream Turned Real Bucket List Travel Destination

Gaia Gensouki - Angkor Wat

As a kid, one of my favorite Super Nintendo games was Illusion of Gaia.

It wasn’t just another adventure game — it felt mysterious, ancient, and bigger than anything I had experienced before. One of the locations featured in the game was Angkor Wat.

At the time, I assumed it was just creative world-building.

Then I found out it was actually real.

Learning that Angkor Wat — the largest religious monument in the world — exists in the Cambodian jungle completely blew my mind. Built in the 12th century, the temple complex is known for its towering stone spires, intricate carvings, endless corridors, and sunrise reflections across still water.

What began as pixels on a screen became a real travel dream.

Visiting Cambodia wouldn’t just be about checking off a world wonder. It would be about stepping into a place that shaped my imagination as a child.

It’s nostalgia.It’s history.It’s wonder.

And it’s been number one on my bucket list ever since I learned it was real.

The Maldives — A Dream Tropical Escape

Some places feel adventurous.

The Maldives feels like peace.

Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands and is known worldwide for its overwater bungalows, turquoise lagoons, and luxury island resorts.

When people picture a dream tropical vacation, this is often what they imagine.

This is the kind of place where:

  • The water looks photoshopped

  • Time slows down

  • You disconnect from everything

For me, this destination represents reward.

Hard work. Milestones. A moment to breathe.

Maybe one day it’s an anniversary trip.

Maybe it’s a “we finally made it” celebration.

But it’s on the list.

Nicaragua — A Heritage Travel Journey

Nicaragua

This one is different.

I’m half Nicaraguan.

And I’ve never been.

Nicaragua isn’t just a destination for me — it’s heritage.

It’s family history.

It’s culture.

It’s food I grew up hearing about.

It’s stories I’ve been told.

I want to walk through Granada’s colorful streets.

I want to see volcanoes rise against the skyline.

I want to hear Spanish spoken the way my birth family speaks it.

This trip wouldn’t be about luxury.

It would be about connection.

About understanding where part of me comes from.

And that feels important.

Why Write About Travel Destinations You Haven’t Visited?

Because travel isn’t just about where you’ve gone.

It’s about where you’re going.

Sometimes the anticipation carries just as much weight as the memory.

These three places represent:

  • Childhood wonder (Cambodia)

  • Dream-level escape (Maldives)

  • Cultural roots (Nicaragua)

And one day, I’ll write the follow-up blog titled:

“I Finally Went.”
